Chris Dyson’s wapping extension wins aj small projects award

CDA’s House in Wapping was chosen ahead of 23 other finalists to win the award.

The ‘subtle, thoughtful yet mischievous’ addition to a Georgian-style terrace in east London was described as ‘architecture for architects, yet a building the public would walk by and equally enjoy’.

The judging panel, chaired by AJ acting editor Rory Olcayto and featuring sustainability editor Hattie Hartman, Sam Jacob of Sam Jacob Studio, Derwent’s Simon Silver, Vicky Legrove of Jackson Coles and Paul Reed from competition sponsor Marley Eternit, were impressed by the scheme’s plan and detailing.

Dyson’s project took home the £1,500 top prize and was praised by Jacob as ‘a really intelligent solution that responds to the history of the site and London.’

He added: ‘The scheme makes a perverse play between history and modern design.’
